Pakistan Mega Leather Show to begin on January 27

1/10/2018

The three-day Pakistan Mega Leather Show-2018 will be held on January 27-29, here at the International Expo Centre with a view to give a boost to the exports of leather and leather goods. Federal Minister for Commerce Mohammad Pervaiz Malik is expected to inaugurate the show. The leather sector's core products including leather garments, gloves, tanned leather and footwear would be showcased at the event.

The Pakistan Tanners Association and the Pakistan Footwear Manufacturers Association are actively working to make the show a successful event.

"All the stakeholders of leather industry are trying best to check the falling exports. The leather show is a part of this which is likely to be attended by foreign buyers," Pakistan Tanners Association former chairman Agha Saiddain said this while talking to Business Recorder, here on Tuesday.

He said most of the leather goods like finished leather, leather apparel and clothing, leather footwear and other products are witnessing persistent decline in exports except leather glove that registered increase in exports to US $67.047 million during July-October 2017 as compared to $59.206 million of the corresponding period of 2016.

He said the liquidity crunch is one of the biggest issues hindering the exports. Though the Prime Minister's Package has considerably resolved the issue of payment of sales tax and income tax refunds, yet a good number of cases are still pending with the authorities concerned.

Besides, exporters are facing problems in getting drawback of local taxes and levies (DLTL). He said linking certain percentage of exports increase to release of DLTL is unjustified. It doesn't happen in any country as these are the local taxes and have nothing to do with the exports, he maintained.

He urged the government to withdraw this condition for release of DLTL.
